Reaching out after a work injury can feel overwhelming, and we want to make that first step simple. Nordanyan Law has helped injured workers across the San Fernando Valley since 2014, and everything below explains exactly what happens when you contact us — no pressure, no obligation, just answers.

Frequently Asked Questions About Contacting Us

Is the first consultation really free?

Yes. Your first consultation with Nordanyan Law is completely free, and there is no obligation to hire us afterward.

During that conversation we listen to what happened, answer your questions, and give you an honest sense of whether you have a workers' compensation claim. You leave knowing more about your rights than when you started, whether or not you decide to work with us.

We offer the free consultation because we believe every injured worker deserves to understand their options before making any decision. There is never a charge simply to talk with us.

What does it cost to hire you as my workers' comp attorney?

In California workers' compensation cases, attorney fees are contingency-based and are set and approved by a Workers' Compensation Appeals Board judge — typically in the range of 10% to 15% of your award. You pay nothing up front and out of pocket.

This means our fee comes out of the benefits we recover for you at the end of your case, and only if we win. If there is no recovery, you owe us no attorney fee. That is what “no fee unless we win” means.

The exact percentage is reviewed and approved by the judge to make sure it is fair, so you are protected by the court itself. We will walk you through this clearly before you sign anything, so there are no surprises.

Is there a deadline to reach out? What is the statute of limitations?

In California, you generally have one year from the date of your injury to file a workers' compensation claim, under Labor Code Section 5405. There are also situations where that one-year clock runs from the last date benefits were provided.

Separately, you should report your injury to your employer in writing within 30 days, under Labor Code Section 5400, to protect your right to benefits. Because these timelines can be shorter or more complicated than they first appear, reaching out sooner rather than later is always the safer choice.

If you are worried a deadline may be approaching — or you think one may have already passed — please still contact us. Some exceptions apply, and it costs nothing to let us look at the details of your situation.

What happens on the first call?

The first call usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and it is a relaxed, no-pressure conversation. We start by simply asking you to tell us what happened.

From there, we ask a few questions about your injury, your employer, and any medical treatment you have received so far. Then we explain your rights, outline the next steps, and answer whatever is on your mind. You are always in control of how much you share.

By the end of the call, you will have a clearer picture of your situation and a plan for what comes next. There is no obligation to move forward until you feel ready.

Do I have to come to your office, or can we do this by phone?

No, you do not have to come in. You can speak with us by phone from wherever you are, which many injured workers find easier while they are recovering.

If you prefer to meet in person, you are always welcome at our Van Nuys office at 14520 Sylvan Street, Suite 200, conveniently located near the Van Nuys Workers' Compensation Appeals Board. We are open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Whether we connect by phone or in person is entirely up to you. Our goal is to make this as comfortable and convenient as possible while you focus on healing.

What languages do you speak?

We provide services in English, Spanish, and Armenian, so you can explain your situation in the language you are most comfortable with.

Talking about an injury and your finances is stressful enough without a language barrier. Speaking directly in your own language means nothing gets lost in translation and you fully understand every step of your case.

When you reach out, simply let us know which language you prefer, and we will make sure someone who speaks it is there to help you.

What documents or information should I bring or have ready?

You do not need any documents to have your first conversation with us — just tell us what happened, and we will guide you from there.

If you happen to have them handy, a few things can help us understand your case faster: the date and details of your injury, the name of your employer, any claim forms such as the DWC-1 form your employer should provide, and records from any medical treatment you have received.

If you do not have any of these yet, that is completely fine. Many people call us before they have gathered a single piece of paper, and we help them figure out what to collect next.

How quickly will someone get back to me?

We aim to respond to every inquiry as quickly as possible, typically the same business day when you reach out during our hours, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

If you contact us in the evening or over the weekend, we will follow up promptly on the next business day. We know that waiting for answers when you are injured and worried is hard, so we try never to leave you wondering.

When you reach out, you can share the best way and time to reach you, and we will do our best to connect at a moment that works for you.

Is my conversation with you confidential?

Yes. Everything you share with us is confidential and protected, even during a free consultation before you have hired us.

You can speak openly and honestly about your injury, your workplace, and your concerns without worrying that the information will be shared with your employer or anyone else. Confidentiality is a core part of how we protect the people who come to us.

Our job is to be a safe, private place to figure out your options. Nothing you tell us puts your job or your privacy at risk.

How do I know if I even have a case?

The clearest way to find out is a free consultation, where we review the specifics of your injury and tell you honestly whether you have a valid workers' compensation claim.

Generally, if you were injured or became ill because of your job — whether from a single accident or from repeated strain over time — you may be entitled to benefits such as medical treatment and wage replacement. Every situation is different, which is why a quick conversation matters more than any general rule.

If we do not believe you have a case, we will tell you plainly, and you will have lost nothing by asking. And if you do have a case, we will explain exactly how we can help you move forward.
